A hedge must be pruned regularly to remain attractive. Most hedges need trimming at least twice a year, some need more. A dense hedge must be developed slowly. Never try to attain the desired height in one season or it will be thin and open at the base. Always trim so that the base is wider than the top. This will help in keeping the shrub healthy.
Two techniques are used for pruning shrubs: heading and thinning. In the heading method branches are cut back to healthy buds from which new growth develops. The thinning process involves cutting a branch or shoot that is removed to another main branch or trunk or back to ground level. Flowers on shrubs are produced from buds formed during the previous summer or fall. For this reason they should be pruned soon after bloom is completed so that it reaches its full blooming potential.
Good, strong form, or architecture, starts with branches evenly spaced along the trunk. Squeezed branches signal problems. Weak branch unions occur where the branch and trunk squeeze together. As the squeezing increases during diameter growth, dead spots or cracks often begin to form below, where the branch is attached to the trunk. Once this problem starts, the weak branch attachment could lead to branches cracking or breaking during mild to moderate storms. Pruning is the most common tree maintenance procedure next to watering. Pruning is often desirable or necessary to remove dead, diseased, or insect infested branches, improve tree structure, enhance vigor, or maintain safety.
